fuel52: I'm putting every single recommendation of yours on my list. I'm not as familiar with Black Sabbath (Hugh, I'll put Iron Man in there), although of course I did hear some of their stuff growing up. My boys definitely tend toward heavy metal, and I have to work with that. (This is NOT a hardship for me, btw!)

Robert aka browse: You're going to have to work harder than that. I need specific songs, and don't worry about Queen. Queen was my ALL TIME favorite band (I think I first heard Fat Bottom Girls at your house) and they have not missed anything on that count. In fact, I'm putting together a Queen playlist as we speak. I'll post it soon. Also, do you think they will listen to smooth n groovy Pink Floyd? Hm. Maybe I can sneak something in.

Diane. Darling. I love you anyway, and we all have our guilty pleasures. Lance has The Partridge Family, I had Shaun Cassidy... In fact, we need a "Guilty (or Not!) Pleasures" playlist, don't we?

Yup, I agree with ditching the Bob Segar cover for Metallica... go with something from Master of Puppets era.

And I second Tom Sawyer for Rush.

Iron Man by Black Sabbath

YYZ by Rush is a MUST, excellent song, however I would have chosen La Villa Strangiata by Rush, very under rated but excellent song, huge dynamics.

I would put in "NIB" or "The Wizard" by Black Sabbath because if they're into Metallica, Black Sabbath are the Godfathers of metal.

The older stuff is covered well I think...but a touch of new rock but old enough that your kids haven't heard much such as "My Wave" from Soundgarden, "Got Me Wrong" by Alice In Chains or "Jerry Was a Racecar Driver" by Primus.

A good thing you're doing for your boys by the way.

I'll add some more bands to the mix.

The Who
Pink Floyd
Aerosmith
Rolling Stones!
Chicago (old stuff, not the Peter Cetera ballads)
Meatloaf
David Bowie
Queen! How could you have skipped Queen?!
The Doors
Hendrix
The Kinks
Lynyrd Skynyrd
Elvis Costello
The Clash
Dick Dale!
Yes

Ok, lyell -- You are TOTALLY right about Metallica, but the boys already know and love them. I was just trying to give them a little breadth, teach them that great bands also cover great bands. Ditto on the Pearl Jam cover of The Who's Reign O'er Me.

Now. Elvis, yes. And it's tough -- he's going to sound very pop in their ears. But I may be able to get them to sit still for Hound Dog.

The two songs by Van Halen (assuming I ditch Sammy) is really just one song. I can't believe Eruption is EVAR separated from You Really Got Me.

Def Lep: Funny! That's a typo! And a good one! I wonder if Word (where I edited my list) did it.

The Kinks are in, of course. Oversight on my part. On my way to browse right this minute!

Ahhh, now don't I feel better.

This is amazingly awesome in so many ways. But since you asked my opinion... ;)

Skip Whitesnake and Sammy Hagar; they really haven't helped define the Rock genre. Try some roots like Chuck Berry. And you can't have a Rock list without Elvis - try Jailhouse Rock or Hound Dog.

Replace the Bob Seger Metallica cover with a truer Metallica song...almost anything from Master of Puppets and earlier. I suggest Whiplash or For Whom the Bell Tolls.

2 Van Halen songs is one too many. I'd say add Little Richard, but that may be too silly for boys that age - they may not appreciate it. Try Paranoia by the Kinks.

Or just get them Guitar Hero III.

(p.s. It's Def Leppard.)
