Check it.

The most recent Women’s International Boxing Association rankings put my trainer Bonnie Mann at NUMBER 3 IN THE WORLD in the Light Heavyweight division.

Yeah, read that again, and wish you were so good.

You can click over there yourself at this link and browse the ratings, but pay PARTICULAR attention (sorry, there’s no other way to do this except in all freaking caps) to the World Champion in the 175 lbs Light Heavyweight division, Carlette Ewell, who is ALSO here in North Carolina.

Can you say “Give us a match-up,” people?

That’s what I’m hoping for. Carlette (14-7) fought just last week and won against newcomer-to-the-ring Tiffany Woodard (2-3) who who impressed everyone by going the distance against a much more experienced opponent, and who is now ranked 4th in the Heavyweight division. Tiffany is also an NC pro boxer, and works out of a gym in nearby Wilson, NC. She made the drive out to get some sparring in with Bonnie before her fight with Carlette, which I got to corner for. Once this young fighter hits her stride, she’s gonna be a force to reckon with.

Meanwhile, I’m ready to see a HUGE hometown match-up between my boss and Carlette.

Fingers crossed for that, but meanwhile, putting my SWAGGER on for Bonnie Mann, #3 in the world!

Eight phenomenal non-stop rounds in the boxing ring last night with my trainer. I am consistently amazed at how much my boxing improves when I’m in the ring with her. I work so hard, learn so much, and have such an incredible experience. I had gotten to the gym an hour early to do 30 [...]

Also on the boxing card was the inspiring young powerhouse fighter Antwon Alston. The night opened with four amateur and [...]

Weigh-ins for the “Mama Said Knock You Out” fight event were held at The Bassment on Glenwood South in downtown Raleigh last night. NBC 17 was there to film the action and interview the promoters and top fighters on the card. Several of the fighters knew each other and greeted one another with hugs and [...]

Mama Said Knock You Out

Here are three excellent reasons you ought to come to the fights this Saturday night in the Raleigh Convention Center: You ought to be able to say “I’ve seen boxing live.” Doesn’t everyone have this on their bucket list? Watching a boxing fight on television is not nearly as exciting as seeing the real thing [...]

My trainer is getting ready for her next pro boxing fight. The fight event, prosaically called “Mama Said Knock You Out,” will be held at the Raleigh Convention Center on May 8th, 2010 and is sponsored by Rapid Fitness and  Jawbreaker Promotions. I was stoked when I heard she had secured a spot on the [...]

Blood and Uppercuts

Last week I was in the ring with one of my trainers, Nassir, who will be making his pro boxing debut in the next month or so. Nas is blazingly fast and uses his considerable hand and foot speed as not only a physical but also a mental advantage over his opponents. Boxing with him [...]

Melissa Hernandez: Her Best to the Last Bell

Many of the top pro boxing women know each other; a fact that becomes more and more evident to me when I hear my trainer Bonnie “Queen B” Mann chatting aimiably about meeting with Mia St. John in Vegas, running into Laila Ali at a hotel, or talking with Erin Toughill or Christy Martin on [...]

Sparring with the Pros

When I walked into the gym for sparring on Sunday I saw not one, but two pro boxing women. In a sport with a sparse population of women, two female pros in one small gym is nothing short of amazing. Of course, my trainer Bonnie is one of the pros, and I see her all [...]

I recently had the opportunity to talk with my trainer outside of the gym, and she shared a little bit with me about how she got started in boxing and the one woman and two incredible men who have made all the difference in her 14 year professional boxing career. Beginnings in Baseball She was [...]
