IHOP breakfast plates

Gram and Papa Clyde took all of us to IHOP this morning before they headed back to Memphis. We dined sumptuously on pancakes, french toast, bacon, eggs, hash browns, biscuits and gravy, and the Maker and the Ice competed to see who could drink more of the little creamers in the baskets on our three pushed-together tables. (Thankfully they left the little jellies alone this time: you think they’re maturing?)

Toward the end of breakfast, I saw Gram whisper quietly to the Ice “Do you have a pocket for this?” as she surreptitiously passed him a crisp five dollar bill under the table.

“Thank you, thank you!” he whispered excitedly, bouncing up and down in his seat.

She grinned and turned to the First, sitting on her other side. “Do you have a pocket for this?” she asked slyly, slipping him a fresh five.

“I love you, Gram, thank you,” the First whispered back to her, pressing a kiss to her cheek.

By now the Maker had taken notice, despite the adult conversation swirling around him. Before Gram had a chance to ask him her question he leaned forward in his seat and whispered across the table: “I have two pockets.”

That’s my boy.

Try Barley for Breakfast

October 31, 2009

Almost every morning I make myself oatmeal for breakfast. But recently I bought whole, organic barley (don’t get “pearled” as it’s processed and you lose nutritional value, more on that in a minute) and came home to experiment.
For some reason, the universe believes in dramatically overcooking most foods and everything I looked at told me [...]

Breakfast of Superheroes

Okay, people. You need to get more protein into your mornings, and ease back on the Lucky Charms. Anyway, you’re wasting money on the Lucky Charms when all you do is eat the marshmallows and leave the oat-y bits. So save those for a dessert and listen up.
You work, play, and train hard, so you [...]

Breakfast of Champions

This was the Maker’s version of breakfast earlier this week. Cinnamon toast (which I didn’t know could be improved upon) with sprinkles.

Breakfast Curiosity

March 16, 2008

Saturday morning I got up to make sausages and pancakes for me and the five guys in my house (ages 41, 14, 13, 10, and 7). I set out six napkins with six forks on top. At the end of the meal, one fork remained untouched (??) and five napkins had never been used. I [...]

Breakfast at Tiffany’s

January 6, 2008

I watched Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s again last night and remembered all the things I loved and hated about that fabulous old (1961) film. I loved that her couch is half a bathtub and that her phone is in a sound-muffling suitcase. I loved every single outfit Holly Golightly wore, even the tuxedo [...]

The Pancake Scheduling System

Last Saturday morning I rocked the house with my (only slightly singed or gooey, take your pick) made-from-scratch (um, I mixed the milk and raspberries into the Bisquick) pancakes. The boys are not particularly snooty about their pancakes, thus I was hailed by all as the undisputed (and uncontested — no one ELSE wants [...]
