    Fight Walk-In Rock Playlist

During my second fight I had really wanted some calm, soothing music to keep my heart rate under control during the long hours of waiting before I actually entered the arena to get in ring. That playlist was called “The Unexpected Bell” (since I didn’t know I was going to fight until the day of) and it worked, completely and totally.

So naturally as I prepped for fight number three I created a similar, calm and quiet — even inspiring! — playlist. Since I was fighting in Atlanta, I called the list “Coollanta” and I filled it with Paul Simon, Manhattan Transfer, Luciano Pavarotti, and the like.

As it turned out, the Coollanta playlist was a complete flop. I didn’t want “calm” at all. I wanted hype.

So when I returned, I made the list I wished I’d had, and it includes my walk in music for that fight, which was Mötley Crüe’s “Kickstart My Heart” (I love you Nikki Sixx!). This still isn’t the playlist I really want it to be, but I have time before my next fight, which is slated for August 2011, to refine.

Meanwhile, here’s some of the list in its early form. I call it “Walk In Rock.” These are actually in order of how many times I’ve played them on my Shuffle. I’ve kept it well-known old school, but I may make a back-up list with more deep cuts from the 80s. Stuff like King Kobra and W.A.S.P. and Kix.

If you have some great hair metal to suggest, please tell me in the comments so I can get this bad girl hot and blistering before the next fight. Otherwise, enjoy. Fight update coming soon.

  • My Birthday Month Wish List

    My Birthday Month Wish List

November is my birthday: all Glowbird (that’s my Twitter name), all the time. I even have a hashtag that has nothing to do with mustaches or writing novels: My hashtag is #nanoglomo, and it stands for National November is Glowbird’s [Birthday] Month. It can be affixed to your tweets as you discuss your plans; that way I can find them and advise you as needed.

And even though I have all that I ever wanted, and far more than I’ll ever need, I’ve posted a wish list in case you’d like to join me in celebrating.

    1. Mail Art

You know how fabulous it feels to get a Real Live Handwritten Letter in that little box outside your house or apartment? Mail art is even wonderfuller. I love mail art. I have a girlfriend who specializes in it, and she sent me mail art last year on my birthday and got me hooked. Now I’m spoilt. Well, I was spoilt before that, but now I’m spoilt-er.

It’s top on my list this year: mail art! Any category! Use sharpies, sew on it, include photos, add scratch-n-sniff stickers, fold it into origami, fingerpaint, make it glow, let it pop up, give it LED lighting, cut and glue, draw, write a funny poem, make it like Wired’s Return to Sender contest, whatever, just please send me (or get your friends to send me) mail art! My address: 1225 Crescent Green Dr, Suite 115, Cary NC, 27518. (This is my work address; I’m hopeful that my coworkers will notice.)

    2. New Boxing Playlists

I listen to my boxing playlists an average of three to five times a week, and I do get tired of some of them. Typically my oldest son keeps me in new metal, but I am currently in dire need of suggestions. I enjoy lists like we used to enjoy albums in the Old Days (uphill in the snow both ways); I consider how the list begins, moves my workout along, and cools me down. Sometimes they have themes. The arrangement and interplay of artists and tunes on a truly excellent playlist is an art form, and I know you have the skillz. Face-melting, atom-rearranging music is not an option, it’s a requirement. Please post your playlists below in the comments (or on your blog, with a link for me)!

    3. Apple Recipes

Every year I ask for or make an apple pie for my birthday, because that’s my favorite. But it doesn’t mean that’s ALL I want. I love apples, and that’s why I have a November birthday. I want ’em every kind of way. Ok, not every way, there are guidelines: I prefer things that are not overly sweet (my apple pies have little or no sugar), sometimes healthy (I eat all kinds of whole grains!), and a recipe that I really like will have plenty of identifiable apple flavor and pieces, not just “hints of apple”. This birthday gift request is NOT JUST BAKED GOODS, send cocktail recipes, main dish ideas, raw food meals, unusual concoctions, anything! Post links, recipes, photos, etc. I can’t wait!

    4. BBQ Recommendations

Ok, I know this is a touchy subject, but I do love barbeque, and I need some new places to try. Carolina Barbeque in Garner NC is a staple in our family, but I would love to try more but I don’t want to go about it in a haphazard way. I grew up on Memphis BBQ (primarily the Rendezvous‘ dry rub ribs), but I love anything vinegary and spicy too. I’m not a ketchup fan at all, and don’t like sweet BBQ either. Where are the places near Raleigh NC with interesting atmosphere, compelling history, or just plain fabulous BBQ? Please leave your recommendations in the comments.

    5. Follow This Blog

If you haven’t already done so, I would be ridiculously happy if you were willing to click “Follow this blog” over on the left sidebar in the Networked Blogs widget. It doesn’t do ANYthing at all except make me feel absolutely thrilled that someone is reading this blog. And please allow me to say it: thanks so much for reading. I’m very glad you stopped by. You make a lot of difference in my world.

    Happy birthday, everyone!

    You May Bow to Me

Tonight I made fresh blueberry pancakes, link sausages, and sliced cantaloupe. Served with chilled champagne. That’s almost better than birthday cake.

  • Breakfast at Tiffany’s

I watched Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s again last night and remembered all the things I loved and hated about that fabulous old (1961) film. I loved that her couch is half a bathtub and that her phone is in a sound-muffling suitcase. I loved every single outfit Holly Golightly wore, even the tuxedo nightgown. And the enormous hats! I loved Patricia O’Neal, and even – even! – Buddy Ebson. George Peppard was okay as a love interest, but he was a bit soft and maybe even too pretty for me; he didn’t come close to matching the passion and energy of Audrey/Holly. If she hadn’t been so screwed up herself, she would never have fallen for him. Oh, and I loved “Moon River.” Especially when Audrey sang it.

Naturally, I hated Mickey Rooney’s role. Yikes! I know it was probably the most apologized-for role in cinematic history, but what a cultural disaster, even worse than the incessant smoking and glib treatment of the mafia. But most of all I feel conflicted about Cat. Poor baby, the misery he endured at that party! Not to mention his most miserable and biggest role during the closing scene in the rain. I have to say my pleasure in that final scene is greatly diminished because of his obvious suffering.

Still, isn’t Audrey stunning? Dah-ling, you know she is.

  • The Pancake Scheduling System

    The Pancake Scheduling System

Last Saturday morning I rocked the house with my (only slightly singed or gooey, take your pick) made-from-scratch (um, I mixed the milk and raspberries into the Bisquick) pancakes. The boys are not particularly snooty about their pancakes, thus I was hailed by all as the undisputed (and uncontested — no one ELSE wants to cook) Queen of the Morning. I reveled in it. In fact, I so enjoyed the fame and glory that I bought more fresh raspberries and plan to do a repeat performance tomorrow.

So today I was scheduling a work-related Saturday phone call, and when asked to pick a convenient time for the call, I simply blurted out, “Let me call you after pancakes.”

And I liked the sound of that, I did! And I decided that I should endeavor to do all future scheduling in such a way as to create envy and excitement in everyone I encounter. Imagine the possibilities:

    1. Sure, I could meet right after ice cream.
    2. I’m available for the conference call before I make my bid for the summit.
    3. Let’s connect pre rock concert. Or we could do it mid art tour.
    4. Perhaps we should do that post-nap.
    5. I’m thinking my schedule should clear out just before chocolate.
    6. We’ll catch up between 5k and hot tub.
    7. Intermission works for me.
    8. Maybe after pinot noir?

You get the idea. Go and do likewise.
