Melissa Hernandez vs. Holly Holm: Women Boxers Talk Smack!

Ok, this is just fun. On October 20th in Albuquerque, NM the world’s top female welterweight Holly Holm (25-1-3, 7 KO) and her challenger Melissa “Huracan” Hernandez (11-1-2, 4 KO) were present for a press conference to announce their December 4th “Bad Blood” WIBA Welterweight title bout. Hernandez, who is moving up from super featherweight to fight Holm, couldn’t keep herself from interrupting fight promoter Lenny Fresquez with some good old fashioned smack talk.

“I want to say something right now,” Hernandez said. “I’m no Mary Jo Sanders (former Holm opponent and women’s champion). I’m Melissa ‘Hurican” Hernandez. I am women’s boxing. You don’t need any sanctions to prove I’m No. 1. I have proved it time and time again and will prove it again Dec. 4 on Holly’s butt.”

“This is my game,” Hernandez continued. “And she will learn this is my game.”

And in a funny addition to the circus, Hernandez stuck out her tongue at Holm during the posedown, as you can see on the video above.

But too much is never too much when it comes to getting a little press for a big fat juicy women’s pro boxing bout.

Ooo-wee. This gonna be fun, y’all.

I would absolutely love to see this get national airtime, but so far I have not heard that it will. It would be pretty exciting to see Hernandez, who has a reputation for being willing to fight anyone, any weight, any time take on the inimitable Holm. Hernandez has just moved her training camp to Denver in order to train at the higher altitude and be ready for the NM fight.

But unless we get airline tickets to New Mexico we may both have to wait for the news reports. If I hear of any network broadcasting the fight I’ll be sure to post. Thanks for reading.
